John, seems you lucked out with the ABS light. I had a similar problem with the ABS, but once the light came on to stay, I had to change the front wheel bearing hub. Although it was just starting to fail, it wobbled just enough to throw the ABS light on. With how much I drive, that light going on probably saved me from breaking down on the road.
my '01 K1500 Suburban ABS light was lit up when I bought the truck 5 years ago, it had something like 180,000 miles at the time?? can't remember...
it towed our 8,000 lb camper thru half the states in the country without a whimper... well, uh, it slowed down to 9 mph in Colorado a few times
I would just pull it back into 1st gear so it would not try to upshift on minor grade changes, until we got over the passes.
being retired, I wanted to go faster, but no hurry, we got there and back home.
it is now around 225k miles IIRC.. the little 5.3L gasser wants to turn at 2800 RPM, if I can get it up to that point, it pulls hard.... but with a 3.73 rear gear, it is down around 1800 at 60-65 mph.... and gutless
our last trip was to Custer, SD.... we made there but I was hearing growling from the rearend..... it made it back home, almost.... just 60 miles from the house, the diff locked up.
looking for a "new" diff, I bought the '02 Excursion and haven't looked back.
Expensive it has been, but no regrets. it is a Torque monster.
