I recently replaced the oil filter adapter on my 6.7 Powerstroke due to it being corroded. After replacing it I have noticed an oil leak clearly coming from the new adapter I installed. I torqued all of the bolts to 89 in lbs so I am not sure why it is leaking. I reused the same gasket because it looked like it was in good shape. Any thoughts?
nothing wrong with removing, cleaning all surfaces , gasket maker on one side of gasket, let sit for a minute , reinstall, tourque all bolts in increments ….start at a low torque , round robin them up in steps to final torque.
What do you recommend I use to clean the surface?
The mating surface was looking rough before I put the new housing on. I was just worried I would scratch up the surface if I went to aggressive with the cleaning. I’ll include a picture of the surface before I cleaned it.
The material on the surface is not gasket material. I believe it might be some more corrosion from salt. The gasket is rubber and sits inside of the oil filter adapter. The gasket looks fine to me. But I could order a new one from ford. I will try a plastic scraper and maybe a scotch bright pad.
If the mating surfaces are pitted you could apply a very thin coating of automotive silicone on both sides of the gasket. But this would be the last resort if you can't solve the leak issue.
As previously mentioned, scrape all surfaces, clean with alcohol, and apply a new gasket.
Myself, I'd probably coat both sides of the gasket with copper coat, just as a failsafe against leakage. K&W used to make it but were bought out by CRC. Permatex makes similar, as well.
The gasket is a rubber ring you don’t apply it to the engine block it sits directly in the oil filter adapter. The gasket I have looks fine but I will order a new one through ford. The marks you are seeing is not gasket residue.

The gasket may look fine but obviously it's not if the adapter is leaking once torqued to spec... it's probably a little hard or shrunk down from being squeezed in there and from all the heat cycles. It's cheap insurance and should fix the issue...
