Hello, I'm having issues timing my poor old 70 dump runner so I was checking the points gap today. Once I turn the crank to get them up on the cam lobe and fully open I can turn the shaft a little in either direction with my fingers. It's enough to close the points, I don't remember if it did that last time I set them so I'm wondering if something is worn or is that normal. There's a little side to side play and I can lift it up a bit, probably the original part like everything else on it.
Big dreams of hei one day but it has work to do so I'm just using it, running pretty good at 20ish btdc which seems higher than my foggy memory remembers.
Thanks for any help, ignore the hot rod air cleaner. My heat flapper won't open haha
Most likely the distributor is worn. Does the rotor spring back when you move it? Take the breaker plate out and see if the springs are good and oil the moving parts.
If you install a HEI be sure to bypass the resistor wire and reconnect the bypass wire from the starter solenoid, add a 12 gauge wire to power it from the ignition switch to the distributor otherwise you will have a running problem.
It looks like there is a rebuild tag on front of the engine. Are you sure the timing marks on the balancer line up when #1 is tdc ?
The rotor won't spring back on it's own, thanks for the troubleshooting tip. I'll take it apart and lube everything, then check the timing marks. The dealer in Edmonton did the rebuild sometime over the 65000 miles, such a great truck.
