Stupid Dist. Question

After installing my distributor the other night I got it to the point where it would start, But the vacuum advance on the side of the dist. is hitting my thermostat housing. I need to turn the dist. back more to get her to run right, and knowing that the dist spins counter clockwise, would i need to step the dist back ( clockwise ) a tooth? If I turn the dist. counter clock wise she dies and wont start so I think im just a tooth off. So technically i would need to retard the timing?

You can either pull it and rotate the shaft one tooth, or jump all the wires around in the direction you need to be able to advance it more. I think you'll have to rotate the shaft one tooth counterclockwise, If I'm visualizing this right. Or move the wires one space each counterclockwise on the cap.

I managed to jump a tooth counter clockwise, she fired right up but by that time it was too late to let her run for very long, so Ill have to see how it runs tomorrow. Do you happen to have a trick on getting the dist to slide into place?? Seems like every time I try to get it in the right place it will never line up. Im fairly sure its the oil pump shaft thats always hanging me up, I think I spend about 20 min trying to get a dist to go in the right spot everytime I end up taking one out, get a little annoying

You're right it is the pump shaft. You can turn it slightly with a 1/4" socket taped to a long extension. I always have the same problem too. I sometimes put a little dab of moly grease on the hole of the distributor to help the shaft find it's way home.

When you go to put it back in, get the gear teeth engaged, and have someone bump the starter while you hold light downward pressure on the distributor bowl. It will most likely slide down into place as the pump load will make the pump reluctant to turn so it will slip until it engages the end of the distributor shaft. The timing will be right as the gears are engaged and cannot 'jump', and the pump doesn't care about timing.
