This is from another thread about PIP sensor going bad:
I could have saved myself a lot of money on replacement parts if I had understood how the ignition system works, especially the limphome feature that works without the computer controlling the spark.
Can someone explain what this is? I did not find it in my owner's manual. I have a code 14 and what I think is a failing PIP sensor. Today it died on me and would not restart at first. In the past, it usually just hiccups and then keeps going. I had no spark. I tried a different ICM and no luck. Then I pulled the SPOUT out and it started. I drove it home without the SPOUT in. Did I activate the "limp home" mode? Or did I just get lucky?
You did not activate "Limp in mode" by disconnecting the SPOUT. It just removed the ECU's control of the timing and allows the TFI to run at "base timing". Sounds like the ECU has bad capacitors. This happened to me years ago. Recap and cleaned leaked acid off PCB and back in business Also check continuity from PIP to ECU, loose wire connection could cause this too.
Wow!
The limp mode has nothing to do with the pip signal or the spout.
True, the timing gets set at 10 degrees and stays there when in limp mode.
The limp mode is activated when numerous sensor inputs fail or there is a PCM problem.
There is a code for some limp mode faults on some applications, same as the for the octane shorting bar.
So, your code 14 for erratic pip signal is most likely the DU30 C stator inside your distributor (provides the pip signal) that needs to be replaced.
Check the bushing while you are in there, they usually last forever, and your shaft should be tight with no clearance and spin freely.
There is a section in the PCED explaining limp mode IIRR
I will post that if I can find it in one of mine
OK so I put in a new Cardone distributor this morning and went on a ~10 mile test drive and no code 14. Also noticed the idle was much more steady, it had been hunting around a bit which I figured was a dirty IAC valve since I have not cleaned in it years. I am fairly certain I have replaced the failing part.
I wanted a Motorcraft but none was readily available, at least where I looked. If anyone has a source for a new Motorcraft distributor for a 1990 460 please LMK. I don't mind spending the bucks on this faithful old truck (the one in my Avatar pic).
In the meantime I will keep my old distributor and see if I can scare up an NOS PIP sensor on eBay.
