Can someone plz educate me on tranmission fluid Brands, types, grades ect!
Just had my 69 C6 tranny rebuilt and builder said to use Mercon fluid. By my reseach, lots of oil Brands sell Mercon? Mercon is a Type? Mercon V and LV are grades?
Some are saying use V in older trannys and others say LV in rebuilt?
Any insite would be appreciated!
I use type F in all my older ford transmissions. It's getting harder to come by these days though. If your builder recommended mercon, i would use Mercon V as its supposed to be backwards compatible with previous versions. Mercon LV is a more modern lower viscosity fluid. It might affect how your C6 shifts as all the metered passages in the older valvebody are calibrated for type F, which is higher viscosity. Clear as mud right? As far as brand, I use motorcraft brand. My local oreilly usually has it in stock.

The type of fluid (lubrication) needed ultimately depends on the composition of the friction material used in/on the clutch discs, and while Type F was used Back in The Day, those discs used a different material than what is offered/available now.
Unless you want to second guess your rebuilder, you've answered your own question in your second sentence.
Edit: Looks like I may have misunderstood the intent of your post, and if so, my apologies. With regards to that, Mercon is a "type", yes, and I would ask you rebuilder which "Grade" (V, LV, etcv) he recommends. As for brand, what's your favorite flavor? Valvoline? Pennzoil? O'Reilly's? NAPA? They all have to pass certain tests to meet the "Grade" certification, so the brand ("flavor") really isn't as important as the Type and Grade, in my opinion.
