C6 tranny fluid ?

C6 tranny fluid ?
I need to change out the tranny fluid on my C6 tranny. I bought the truck 2 yrs ago and as far as I know the tranny was never rebuilt but works just fine. So my question is, do I have to use Type F fluid or can I use Mercon/Mercon V? I had another C6 tranny that I had rebuilt back in 2003 and before I had it rebuilt I used Type F and after it was rebuilt the mechanic said to use Mercon. I know Type F doesnt have friction modifier in it but would it hurt to put Mercon/mercon V in the tranny even if I dont know what kind is already in there. Thanks

If it's the original C6 that came in the truck, I would go by what the owner's manual specified. Go online and dig a bit of you don't have access to an owner's manual. I'm not sure what they physically did differently, if anything, inside the trannys over the years but why take the chance? The cost of the fluid (Mercon vs. Type F) is about the same.

The owners manual calls for type F and it even has that on the dipstick so I guess ill put that in there. The only thing I can think that would be different is what the clutch plates are made of.
