Depends on whether it has a cable or not
The electronic ones with a VSS usually need a new VSS for your problem and not a speedo
The cable operated ones will need to be lubed or the cable and housing replaced
Does it fluctuate at low speeds?
Does the cruise control surge at freeway speed when the speedo goes nuts?

If the VSS is the sensor in the rear diff, yes it has one and it's brand new (and I've tried two different brand new ones).
Could it *also* be cable operated?
It does not fluctuate at low speeds (so far as I can tell so far.)
The cruise control stays steady regardless of the speedo fluctuations. I specifically tested and noticed this. So when I'm cruising at 75, and the needle is dipping down to 60 and up to 80, the truck speed seems to remain steady.
I replaced the VSS (twice, since the problem didn't go away) with good replacements. No change. I've also removed the RABS module, not sure if that matters, but the speedo was worse with it in (and so was the transmission - whole other issue).
So does that mean it's down to the PSOM? Can you tell me the procedure from here?
About the tone ring, I know what these are in general but not where they are in the F250. Can you tell me? Also, I removed the RABS module to make the tranny shop shifting wildly (and to calm the speedometer, as it was worse before). Does that play into things at all?
I guess what I could really stand to know is, what system is this part of? Meaning, if I look for videos on how to replace the tone ring, am I looking for e40d videos? videos pertaining to the axle? The 5.8?
My late junk are manuals. I do know the PSOM is a known issue as the electronic bits die, similar to the PCM.
I would start with testing the fresh VSS. Then its wiring back to its end point (cluster or PCM?). These trucks are old, so everything craps out with age eventually.
Best to do is buy an EVTM for your model year and start testing stuff.

I'm sorry, EVTM? I'm not familiar with newer computerized cars. I looked on Rock Auto for the part but that doesn't pull anything up. Can you explain? I understand testing the VSS, and I have tracede the wiring back a good bit. Then when I removed the RABS I thought the problem went away so I stopped tracing.
I mean, maybe this isn't a big deal or anything to worry about. I just figured I'll replace or clean the easy things.
