Going to try here couldn't get a decent answer from other sites I need a tailgate for my 62 uniy. I have only heard LMC and he was happy has anyone else purchased from any other source? This is a fairly expensive investment and just want to be sure. I know Dennis Carpenter (DC) has them, CCJ Pony, Southwest Classics. I pretty much imagine they are all made in one place and distributed. I see alot of sites that will add that they purchase from DC so at least a little truth in advertising. Any help appreciated
I have Not purchased any of the aftermarket uni tailgates. But, the word on the street is they are all produced by the same manufacturer.
word is the metal is significantly thinner than originals. Fitment was also complained about, but with a 60+ year old truck bed, who is to say which was not right.
I purchased a very rusty original and replaced the bottom radius with a Cr tube.
Thats mine it actually folded in center when tailgate was let down and someone just put a bar across the bottoms are rusted tru and both sides I think the only thing that still works are the latch's.
If you're center with the logo and sides are solid I'd take a stab at replacing the top round and bottom round with chrome moly tube. Works well with LMC hinges... Much of the sheet metal can be patched in near the tubes with hand tools and a mig welder. If the center is shot a smooth tail gate can be fashioned with the contours of the taillight area.
The no welding option is the repop tailgate, and hope it fits well...
I’ve heard the stamping on the letters isn’t as deep or defined as the stock tailgate.
I have a stock one that needs metal work. If you were in SoCal I’d give it to you. I’m not interested in shipping anything.
Okay sorry been gone awhile lost my oldest Son to Parkinsons and colon cancer and I was caretaker along with his wife and daughter. I broke down and ordered the tailgate from Dennis Carpenter I don't see where everyone was complaining (unless they are so tight they squeak like me) it was a big expense but is really nice the only drawback is it is bare metal only coating is a spray like cosmoline. You see spot welds and some grinding marks but with a little time and patience they turn out perfect. Don't cheap out order it all when you do, I got the new lower hinges and the top locks the only things I reused were the inner guides for lack of a better word. I cleaned it with some acetone, acid etch primer, then primed it and it sets still haven't chose a color yet.

I think what people most complained about was the fitment. How well does the tailgate line up with the bed?

instig8r63, I have a 63 uni project and part of that project is goung to be finding a tailgate, there was not one included when I bought the truck.
I also happen to be in SoCal and would be happy to take that gate off of your hands.
