So, yes one should pay more attention when buying a new truck, but…. I assumed my 2022 SD Lariat came with the installed tailgate step / ladder - but it didn’t… Has anyone installed the step themselves, how difficult is the job?
I believe the tailgate shell is different. The most cost effective way would be to find a complete tailgate with step, then have it painted if not the correct color.
Yup, tailgate is completely different, and there are some special mounts and brackets to handle the load of heavy people stepping up on it.
A new tailgate from Ford is major bucks, salvage yard is best bet, make sure to get all the pieces with it.
Yep. Finding a tailgate with the step will likely be the best bet. You could try the for sale posts here, or even junk/salvage yards. Of course you could always order a new one too. You could probably sell your current tailgate to recoup some $$! The tailgate step is great to have and works well, although it adds some heft to the tailgate. Totally worth it though!
Ford doesn't sell the tailgate complete, if you saw how much it would cost to buy all the parts necessary to assemble a complete tailgate with step you might be shocked. Thousands $$$, and still requires painting. The step assembly alone is over a grand.
It is harder to find take off tailgates with the step, most I see are the kind without, but I do see them on marketplaces like Craigslist from time to time.
I had looked into adding the tailgate step to my 2018 F-150 back in 2019 but discovered it was around $3K for the new tailgate with the step and still needed to be painted to match the truck. I figured out a few ways to get my skinny butt into the bed that were much less expensive and just as effective!! And when I traded the F-150 for my 2022 F-250 the dealer didn't even care that the step wasn't there and told me I wouldn't have gotten any extra credit if it had been there.
The cost of adding the tailgate step option on a new build is huge bargain compared to adding it afterward.
I bet you'd have a couple of grand at least into it adding a good used one, a new would be at least twice that.
Definitely glad I added the option to mine, it has been used many times.
Best bet is a salvage yard or maybe an upfitter that would willing to sell you an entire bed with tailgate or if you are lucky the tailgate (I doubt there are many that order tailgate with the step knowing it's going to get removed). Maybe upfitters order with the step knowing they can get a lot more compared to w/o the step?
As a dealer to see if someone would be willing to order a truck with it and willing to swap it for some cash and tailgate w/o a step. I doubt this too, as it's unlikely the color will match perfectly.
