A slug when cold?

Warm weather or cold—more so in the cold—my truck is an absolute slug until it reaches operating temp. Once up to temp she’s golden. When I leave work I have to pull onto a 55mph highway and get on it and sometimes it’s scary lol.

-250k miles unknown mileage/hours on hpop and injectors.
-Deleted EBPV
Starts and idles just fine. No excessive smoke or anything like that.
-Hydra chip if that matters

What can I monitor with Forscan? Any ideas?

Thanks for any advise!

Andrew

Mine don't like to get up and go until the Oil temp is about 90ish...
I prefer to not push it, until the oil is at least over 60*

Mass fuel desired, ICP, and IPR DC% would be a good start. Probably MAP, EBP, and Boost in there as well.

Edit: Have you tried different tunes or setting to 00 to see if there's any change?

Edit 2.0: Fuel pressure, we'll definitely want that.

Sweet thanks for the quick reply’s guys. I’ve tried 00 and did not see a difference. I need to read up on how to check fuel pressure on the 7.3 as I’ve never done that before.. on that note I have no hutch mod to speak of so that’s on my to do list.

edit: If I hammer down it does not smoke a ton it just feels like it has limited fuel if that makes sense. It almost seems like 1/2 to full throttle makes no difference. Hope this helps

Hmm, might throw APP on the list too just in cast. I'd start rounding up supplies for fuel pressure test ASAP. There's a good write up in the tech section for that.

I would add EOT (engine oil temperature) to that list of PID's as well. I seem to recall the Ford Service Manual stating the PCM holding back a bit until EOT was at a certain parameter, but I could be wrong.

If you want to see what I monitor on FORScan when I am running it, take a look at the images in the post below.

I was away from home, my daughter's car did not start one morning.

she got in the 7.3L Excursion, got it started, and immediately drove out trying to get up speed to get to her job, which is only 1/2 mile away, unless the Train is blocking the tracks, like it does a lot, she had to go around which is about 4 miles....

she said the truck would not go over about 10 mph for the longest time.... she was at work before it warmed up enough to really go.

I started it up 5 days ago in 34* Wx, let it idle for 3 minutes, and then let it idle out onto the city street... ( I was retrieving it from the Diesel shop where repairs had been done )

a mile later, off the city streets, I was on US-10 which is 45 mph for a few miles, I got it up to 35 mph and let it go easy until the speed limit changed to 55.... it shifted into 4th about that same time, and off we went, at 60 mph the rest of the way

Thanks fellas. I have a long weekend coming up I’ll plug in and monitor some PID’s. The EOT makes sense in my mind because once it’s up to operating temp on the dash dummy gauge it clears up and runs fine. I dunno.

Have a look at these, they're a little easier on the bank balance. I don't have any at the moment but they're well reviewed and I talked to one or two guys here that have some of their stuff and they were happy with it.

Agreed, sounds like normal EBPV operation. The big giveaway will be the exhaust sound vs normal.

The very first post says it's deleted. Unless they've learned how to grow back I'd put ebpv in the checked and cleared column.

Edit: They haven't learned how to grow back have they?

Thanks again for the help fellas. Yep the EBPV is long gone. That would stick closed randomly when I first bought the truck—no power whatsoever!

I gotta remember how to use Forscan it’s been a minute. I’ll plug in Friday morning and see what I can come up with. I have been reading up on the Hutch mod too and I need to do it. I’m not sure if that’s my problem yet but I can guarantee it has not been done and it’s long overdue.

Do you recall the feeling or power output when the EBPV was causing problems and if so, are they similar or different in a way that you cannot describe?

Also, check out these links to refresh your memory and/or edumacate you on FORScan/FSL.

Thanks Sous, the symptoms are sorta similar when the ebpv would stick closed there was nothing for power so bad in fact that I had to pull over several times just to get it off the dang road.

The problem I’m having now is there’s just nothing there when I get after it—only when cold though. It’ll gain speed it’s just like there’s no boost. I’ve checked for boost leaks with my cool tester and everything is good. When up to temp she’ll boost well into the mid 20’s with little effort.

Hopefully tomorrow I can get a better picture for you guys. Thanks again,

Andrew
