M5OD Swap
I am getting back to my F100. I have not installed the five speed in the truck.
I was curious as to how to mount the master cylinder. There was some conversation about changing out a pedal. However, I believe I have the right pedal in the truck already. As it had originally had the three on the tree. I have the plate on it already.
What I am not sure of is where the master cylinder should be mounted on the firewall. Has anybody else done the five speed swap that would have some pictures or be able to comment on where it should be mounted?
thank you in advance.
You may have manual pedals but they are for linkage clutch not hydraulic / slave.
The end on the cross shaft that pushes the master is clocked differently and I dont think you can swap the end link as the shaft is also clocked differently but not ever doing this I am not 100% on that just what I seen posted.
So you either need the full pedal assy for hydraulic clutch and non-power brakes (good luck)
or
Get the cross shaft and end link and install it on your pedal assy.
I would get the hydraulic assy and swap everything on the bench then back in your truck.
Again I have not done this but they say tere are 2 little dimples where the bolts holes need to be.
Now being your truck is before they were maybe thinking of hydraulic clutch they may not be there,
I think once you have the right pedal assy installed you can see where the rod should be or better yet install the plate and it will show where they need to be.
BTW you do not have "the plate" what you have is the normal plate all trucks got.
Why would they put a reinfocement plate on a manual linkage truck before hydraulics were in the picture??
You need to get the plate and again it will show where the holes need to be.
My 81 F100 firewall showing the plate all trucks have.
Oh I dont see a ground wire from the motor to the firewall in the picture.
That screw below the throttle cable is the firewall side and on that side of the block I think it is, there is a threaded boss the other end of the wire goes to.

@Franklin2 gave me a link to a discussion on small and large reinforcement kits that contained the plate. Also trying to track the guy down on oil burners but can’t find his contact info yet.
I think that it’s in the top left corner of the plate that all trucks have. Compared to @Franklin2 link I suspect it’s here.
Approx location of reinforcement plate?
Didn’t know that. Thanks.
I’ll have to find the bolt hole that had the threaded stud. Was on the drivers side of the engine correct? On the block or head? Rockauto carries them maybe? Thanks.

Thanks . I redid the engine and there wasn’t one on there. You referring to the bolt circled in the pic?

I would get the whole pedal assy. from the yard. I bet it will be from a power brake truck thing is the power & non-power brake pedals are different where the master / booster hook to it. So you will need to use your brake pedal with the hydraulic clutch cross shaft and end link and why I say get the whole pedal assy.
I dont know if the later year trucks shaft and end link will work or not but I know the whole pedal assy will not swap as a whole.
Your picture if where the holes get drilled looks to be too high. The 2 marks are from factory spot welds.
As said get the plate from Bronco Grave Yard and use it as a template to drill the master mounting holes.
Yes that screw should have a wire and it runs to the left side of the motor. I cant remember if head or block but think block is where the threaded boss is for the other end of the wire. You dont have to get the wire from Rock Auto or LMC or who ever.
I made a 10 gauge wire that I put the ends on for the ground wire. I had everything so if was free.
I dont see why you could not use a 12 gauge wire but for grounds bigger is better.
Local parts store have braided ground straps just get one that is long enough.

That overdrive gear will be worth all the trouble once you get it going. Do you know what rear gear ratio you have?
One
thing about a 9” rear there is plenty of info on it. Rear end will eventually be changed.
I can run 45 MPH in OD but 50+ MPH is a lot better.
Running 70MPH @ 1800 RPM is nice.
