So smog pump has been squealing, chirping, etc for about a week. Today I removed the smog pump pulley and used wwhite routing method with a 97 1/8" belt to keep the ol truck up and running. It works but squeals for about 2 seconds on start up, which from what I've read is to be expected.
I would like to either rebuild my smog pump or replace with a rebuilt/new smog pump. I live in a Metro area for now and frequently sit/sleep in the truck with it idling and just generally would like to keep OEM equipment so the next owner doesn't inherit mysteries.
I can't find any replacement pumps except for junkyards and ebay. Ebay wants $300, I haven't asked at junkyards but I'm pretty sure I don't want one anyway. My truck just turned 100k miles last month snd the pump is out so I doubt the junkyard part would last long. If anyone knows where I can buy a new/rebuilt smog pump please spare.
I am thinking maybe I could find a compatible smog pump new for a mustang etc. and then just swap the correct sized pulley over and be good. That's my hope.
Otherwise does anyone have a good write up on how to rebuild the smog pump? Something that will last 30k miles or more.
None actually pump smog
They all pump air and are just called a smog pumps
Most at the junkyard will be no good due to sitting, the humid air ruins them.
Don't know where to tell you to get a new one but they used to be 125 new from Ford back in the 90s
I would go the Mustang route or whatever is the cheapest for a new one
I’ve never called them that’s because that isn’t what it is. I would suggest doing what I did and use an idler bracket and pulley. I got mine from LMR but I don’t know if the OP has a 302/351 or something else.
