Interesting. MPG/aerodynamics perhaps? The "vents" on the 2017-22s are nothing more than space filler to look futuristic and place a label for the trim/model.

I'm guessing to carry off heat, or some sort of duct to allow air flow through the radiator(s.) It makes sense.

Ford describes it as for aerodynamics, not heat reduction. Air entering the engine bay through the radiators creates a higher pressure area within the bay. the higher pressure translates to more drag. The vents help reduce the pressure in the engine bay. That's my take on it anyways. Hard to imagine it actually makes a meaningful improvement in fuel mileage.
