Some of us have no use for a step there anyways. I don't use a toolbox, don't use a 5th/GN hitch, and with a 34" inseam, the tire is easy to use. Plus, AMP Research had an aftermarket solution a long time ago that stays hidden when not in use.
But if you like it and love using it, I'm happy for ya. It's here to stay, so those of us on the other side of the fence are just yelling at the clouds anyways.
So instead of having a step that looks better and provides function, we'd rather have a plastic cover that looks ugly like an afterthought and provides no function? Um... ok.

Yeah well...just remember, there are people out there that think the Chevy HD is the best looking truck on the road

Rather have no step at all... maybe Ford can follow that great design of a square wheel well opening to show off a round tire.

Agreed, I like the step and use it all the time to access the bed when I’m parked in the garage (because the bumper/tailgate are all the way against the wall) and I can see how it will be perfect for toolbox access. I’ll have a toolbox some day soon. It’s very sturdy and wide enough for two feet. But, I like the bumper steps too, and the pocket handles at the top of the bed corners…those are new to Ford too so I’m probably in the wrong for being positive about those.
I think it looks perfectly fine and for those of us who have them it’s pretty unanimous it’s a really useful feature that we wouldn’t give up at this point.
I know I appreciate mine and would not trade it for a bed without the step let alone some cheesy panel that looks worse than any step does lol.
That step may be useful and handy and practical and all that. So would a step ladder welded to the bed. But like the stepladder, it will never look good.
