I’ve owned a 2004 f350 for a 3-4 years, had my share of problems. But this one is stumping me.
I needed a new ignition lock cylinder as mine is getting very stiff. The keys are also not in the best shape anymore .
so I order a new cylinder lock with a new set of keys ( these are the ones with transponders inside of them - I didn’t know at the time )
My old set of keys had a transponder fob on the key chain , so I figured if I kept that fob on the keychain to the new keys, no problem ? Right?
I did not disconnect the battery in this procedure , so I popped out the old ignition lock , popped in the new one and to my disbelief, the truck won’t start , lights come on but nothing.
I ended up taking out the new cylinder and put the old one back in , and it will not start with the old set now ( yes the transponder is with the set of keys when I try )
The PATS light blinks when the key is first put into the ignition , and then goes full red when It’s on the “on” position - however I’ve never noticed this before so I don’t know what’s normal.
any thoughts as to where to go from here? Did I “trip” the pats, I can’t figure this out.

Wrong. The additional transponders will interfere with the reading of the desired one.

It's supposed to go solid for a couple of seconds and then go off. If it fast-flashes, PATS has been triggered and is supposed to disable the engine.
Also, does the pats wiring have to be around the lock cylinder? Or just close by.
No, but the transceiver ring does have to be "around" or immediately adjacent to an authorized transponder so it can be read.
The '00-'03/'04 Excursion had a bit of a basturdized PATS system that tended to get glitchy at times. Someone with hands-on experience should come along and offer some insight.
I just re-read that this is an F-350, not an Excursions as I originally interpreted (Thought i was in the Excursion sub-forum...). The Super Duty pickup trucks didn't have PATS back in those days. Therefore, PATS is not your problem.
Is there an aftermarket alarm or remote on this truck?
That’s what I think I’m going to do. I believe I would just have to find which wire is the ignition wire and reconnect it and disconnect the entire system .
