Learning Mode ?
My question is, what exactly is the transmission learning? My driving style? Ive been taking it easy with the new trans but I consider myself rough in my normal driving. So is it better for me to drive is like I do? (Heavy gas foot and brake )
The trans tcm learns how the truck is operated and adjusts to it.
It is a constant process too, it doesn't stop after a time, keeps learning through its life, but after a while the adjustments get less and less.
A tech can reset the learning mode to make it start over as part of a repair process.
And, at first the trans operation can be rough, but smooths out as it learns.
Every transmission is a bit different. We programmed nominal shifting pressures that will work fairly well on most transmissions. Until learning was invented just before the turn of the century that was how all transmissions were programmed, and that programming had to last for the life of the vehicle.
As clutches wear the pressure required to maintain the same slip time will change. Also, the pressures that the clutches see vary as the solenoids, pump, and seals wear over time. The learning looks at how long the clutch slips during a shift and changes the pressure for the next time that shift happens to get the slip time back to the nominal slip time that an engineer like me programmed into the computer.
