So if the vehicle shifts smoothly but sometimes is rough moving the shifter into park and seems to have a little more roll once it is placed in park is this a sign of a transmission going bad or just how that one works. If its a sign then what can be done to fix/extend the trans? I noticed on the Ex I test drove that it was a little tough going into park but I have had a similar experience with the 2001 escape that I am currently driving though it does not happen much unless I am parked on a hill. Any input would be appreciated.
Thanks for link and from what I read it sounds like that may be what was going on with the ex I test drove. I know that you get roll after you put an auto trans in park but does how much it moves any indicator of the state of the trans? On the escape I recently parked on a rather steep driveway and got the normal bit of roll back after letting off the brake but was kind of hard to shift back into reverse when i went to leave, is this normal or bad?

thanks,
on a steep grade you should set the parking brake/emergency brake, there is a little fork that holds the trans in park it will set itself on the fork and put a lot of pressure on it, that is why it's so hard to get it back out of park, so remember set the parking brake when on a steep incline.
