As you can see here I jumped the wrong battery and this happened. I was able to get the thing I am holding in my hand out of the starter but I can’t get the other part out of the solenoid. I have no knowledge of any of this. I have never seen anything like it.
This is the part that came out of the starter I can get it back in. Would I still need a new starter? How many bolts hold in the starter? If I just need a new solenoid I can pick one up today. The truck has some engine problems but I’m trying to sort through them. I am considering dropping a 7.3 Idi in.
that goes inside the starter case, rite?
you have to take the starter apart to put it back in.
it would probably just be easier to get it rebuilt while you have it out.
depending on what starter is in the truck, either two or three bolts.
the two outer bolts you can see, and one up between starter and block you cant see and need an extension on the socket to get too. you need a lot of patience and cuss words to get that one out.
the gear reduction starters are a lot better than the big direct drive units.
Well shoot. It goes in the starter case but I was able to pull it out of the little hole and unbolt it. So I could still put it back. The starter worked great until I burned up the linkable fuse.
well I got it out and took some photos for you. I know I at least have to replace the solenoid. But as for the starter I can’t find the fusible link or any of the parts that come out of it. Or one that has it. So I think I need a whole new starter. I am on a budget but I need something that is reliable spins fast and is cheep. The engine has problems. I don’t know if I’ve said this yet but I might swap a 7.3 idi into the truck and if I do I will put the new parts I’ve put on this Motor onto that one.
what are you calling a fusible link, the strap that goes from starter to solenoid?
the only fusible links on these trucks are in the charging circuit and main cab power circuits. they come off the fender mount starter relay in are part of the main wiring harness.
I do but they are expensive and take a long time. I ended up just getting a new starter. It doesn’t look as sturdy but it has a lifetime warranty. Was the old starter original?
Some of the new starters are a lot smaller in physical size but the gear reduction and a higher speed motor seems better than some of the older direct drive ones
