IAC valve didn't fix the problem

I drive a '97 Ford F150 4X4 w/a 4.6L V8. The truck will idle rough every once in a while after coming to a stop. But only when at a stop with the transmission in gear. The "check engine" light also comes on after this happens. After diagnosing the engine, the computer says that it has a vacuum leak. The gas cap seals, and I just replaced the Idle Air Control valve hoping that this would fix the problem, however it didn't. The truck has 83,000 miles on it, and still has the same fuel filter. I'm sure the filter needs replacing, but I'm not sure if this would cause the problem I've described. what do you think?

Welcome to FTE!

Hopefully we will be able to help out.

A good start would be checking out your pcv valve..could be clogged.

after that I'd check all vaccum lines, any one of them can cause the symptoms that you speak of.

It could. However, you need to check vacuum leak sources. What did you use for the code and what did the actual code say?

Can't remember what the actual code was, just the translation. I'll have to hook it back up tomorrow and let you know. Thanks for the reply.

Tonite I was able to get to my friends and have him hook the computer up. The code is: P0442, which translated means, "Evaporative Emissions Control Leak Detected (Small Leak)".

Well I looked up the code for myself, got a copy of a Haynes Manual, and it looks like the problem could be either:
1. An inoperative vapor management valve.
2. A damaged charcoal canister.
3. Damaged hoses.
I didn't see any obvious hose problems, although I didn't put the truck on a lift.
Does anybody have any experience with any of these items going out on a truck around 80K miles?
Also, does Ford honor the federally mandated extended emissions control system warranty for a vehichle this age with as many miles? I'd really like to just let Ford fix the truck.
Thanks.

Fixing a P0442 can be a real pain in the you know what.
Probably the first thing to try would be to replace the gas cap. If it has a small leak it will set the code. Check the hoses etc at the canister at the back to make sure they are all attached and dont have any holes or anything in them. A Canister Vent Solenoid that is stuck partially open can cause it tool The CV solenoid is on the canister, has a hose and a connector on it.
I'm not sure what the emissions warranty is where you live but it wouldnt hurt to ask your dealer about it.
