Having an intermittent abs issue. Seems to only happen once the truck is warmed up. ABS light comes on and as soon as I cycle the key it goes away and either stays off the rest of the day or comes back on with a few miles of driving. Pulled codes and came back with a c1229. Ive data logged both front wheel speed sensors and the rear speed sensor (vss). They all read the same while driving. I removed the vss and cleaned it. Wasn’t that dirty honestly. Still getting occasional abs light. Both front unit bearings have less than 70k miles on them. Went ahead and ordered a new fomoco vss just because.
Any thoughts? Really hoping it’s not the abs module.
X2 on a wire fault. I had mine wear one of the wires clean in two by one of the loom hangers between the frame rail and the center section. Got any other symptoms like erratic speedometer or cruise control randomly cutting out?
Checked wiring at the vss and everything looks right. KOEO I verified that I have the pulsing 3.5v signal coming from the abs module back to the vss. Also with the KOEO, I mashed every wire and connecter coming off the abs module and never tripped the abs light.
Can the abs module be removed from the abs pump without pulling the pump out of the truck?
It looks like this is on your 2001 truck? I am unable to find C1229 in the GEM DTC list, but in the VSM DTC list it comes back as "Wheel Speed Sensor Rear Center Coherency Fault ".
Removal of the ABS module on the 2001 appears to be relatively painless.
There are two different connectors and pinpoint tests for the ABS on a 2001, do you know which you have?
If your focus is still on the VSS and the possibility of a wire fault, attached is the VSS pinpoint test that may lead you to a resolution.
When I was working, these guys did an excellent job of rebuilding failed ABS modules for my shop. This link is for a 2001 F250. At the time of this posting, the charge is $130.00. https://modulemaster.com/pages/produ...k_ford~md_f250

Wow that seems really reasonable, maybe I'm just going numb to the diesel engine parts sticker shock. No that is reasonable when you remember that $130 is a tank of fuel give or take your location.

I think I sent a dozen Bosch modules to them over the years for a bad run of ABS modules on 1999-2005 VW Passat/Audi A4 chassis and every one of them installed back on the valve body with perfect function.

Awesome sous thank you!
the truck in question is a 2000 model. I have three connections on the abs module. You can see two of the connections in this pic
It appears the problem was the VSS. The new one ohmed out at over 2k ohms and the old one was less than 10 ohms. It was so bad; I have no idea how I didn't have any shifting or speedometer issues. I must've caught this thing right as it was on its way out. Put 40 miles on it today and all is well so far.
Good to hear this. I am convinced the VSS is not required for the speedometer and cruise, because I purchased my truck with a bad VSS. It measured open circuit and yet I still had speedo and cruise control.
My guess is the ABS module is still getting the front sensors and sends that to the PCM.
