E40D upgrades or headaches?

Odds are there's a post on here already and I just can't find it but I'm curious as to see if a 95 F350 E4OD can go into a 95 F150 5.0 4x4 without a big ecm swap. Also is there a big difference or no? I feel my transmission is starting to get close to giving up so I was thinking of just getting a second transmission either new or used from a 2 or 350 to have rebuilt/pumped up to just put that in. As always any thoughts are appreciated. 👍

I purchased a core 95 2WD 5.8L E4OD. I went through it completely. Extra clutches, gears, HD everything. When I was done, I swapped it out with the stock one. Learned a lot and now I understand more what happens with the E4OD.

I am no expert but if the transmission can bolt up [diesels and gas are different], the computer should be fine. There are some electrical issues on the early built transmissions, but as long as you keep the same year, the computer would probably be happy.

If you source a 2wd trans, you'll end up gutting it to convert to a 4wd trans.

Just mentioning if you didn't know.

Note BBF, Diesel, SBF all have different bellhousings.

IMO, better off having yours gone through before total failure if it is starting to go south.

I figured the Bell housings are probably different but good to know for sure, I'm just curious on the internals like if I can just straight rip a 95 f350 e4od and put it in the f150 I've got and just swap the bell housing. Or if there's no difference on the internals I'll just get one from an f150

Ah alright I was curious as to what the computer would be happy with I was going to try and find an exact year n model as mine.

If you're going 95 E4 trans into 95 E4 truck, there's no need to change computer.

You're not changing bellhousings. They are integral to the case, one piece.

The only removable piece is the tail shaft. You have to gut a 2wd trans to install parts that allow a transfer case mount to be attached.

I suspect that is what you were thinking.

The internals are different between different engines. They are not different between truck models. So a 5.8L F-150 will have an identical transmission to a 5.8L F-350.

Mark, I am curious if there are any updates or upgrades you recommend during a rebuild. I know Ford rolled out changes over time and there is quite a bit that can be done especially with the pre 95 units.

Thanks

I'm good with how they operate, not so much on hardware. I know there were improvements over the years, but I don't have details.

When I rebuilt my 95 core for my 95 F250/5.8/RWD, I found there is a lot of information about the updates and a manual that puts most of it in one area. In the beginning, it was pretty much mind boggling, but after a few months of reading/researching, I got the hang of what everyone was talking about. I'm really good with Mercedes transmission and know nothing about Ford's E4OD but when I got done, the transmission shifted in all the gears including reverse.

There are lots of things that can be upgraded to make them stronger and more reliable. The '95 at least had an improved pump and center support bearing. It still had aluminum planet carriers. All E4ODs can use a better 3-disk torque converter.

Watch the E4OD series from Marshall Sanders on YouTube for all the details. https://www.youtube.com/@marshallsan...rch?query=e4od

If you fix stuff for a living, you will appreciate what Marshall produces. The Transmission Bench videos are helpful, but very boring and only explains how to take things apart and how to put them together again. Not much about how and why.

If you watch a lot of the E4OD and 4R100 videos, you will get a hang of what you need to do or what not to do.
