voltage question

1996 f-150 truck 5l. battery voltage not running 12.78, running no load 14.32, running with ac &lights 14.8, after driving around 10 miles with full load on battery voltage 13.91, all these voltage checks made at battery with volt meter. guage in truck running with no load showing right of center. with full load on battery guage showing just left of center. these guage readings are while truck is at highway speed around 55mph. is what i am seeing a guage problem or a charging issue. thanks for any help!!!

I don't see a charging issue. The factory gauges are estimates. My gauge goes left of center if I just use a power window. I don't think you have a problem.

thanks jas88. i left something out, gauge reads right of center which is normal at all times even with lights on. it is when i turn ac on is when i see a problem with gauge even though volt meter reads 13.9 at battery. could there be high voltage draw at ac compressor? belt is good and no noises coming from anything. bottom line inside gauge reads good at all times except when ac is turned on.

When you turn on the A/C you also power on the blower fan. I do not know the total amp draw of the system running, but I would guess probably 15-20A with the blower on high. Your alt is either 95A or 130A. The 130A will handle it better than the 95A.

You are making a stink for no reason, accessories draw amps in use. The gauge reacts at times, just how these trucks are built. The system checks out as you have tested it, just drive on.

thanks for your input, my gauge has always went back to right of center under full load ac, lights. it is only going left of center with ac on.it's never did this before. could it be ac compressor is having a problem? there again belt is good and no noise from anything. thanks for help

Try turning your AC off and your fan on with the heater and lights on as usual and see what the volts gauge or whatever gauge you are using shows.

WIth no load, not running, the batt shows 12.8. Normal. With eng running and small load the alternator is charging the batt, showing right of center on the guage (and 14ish on your voltmeter). Normal again. With a load on it, it shows left of center because the batt is putting out more than it's currrently being charged by the alternator. Again, normal. Hope that helps.

thanks for input, problem is gauge responds correctly to everything except when ac is running, in the past gauge with ac on always fell right of center. but now it's left of center could over draw of voltage from ac for whatever reason make this happen? even though voltage at battery using volt meter reads 13.9 volts. it just doesn't make sense. this is a new problem i have never had on this truck. alternator test good on bench test, battery is new, takes charge and holds charge. something is not right.
