Is the voltage guage in my 97 F250 HD a idiot guage, or does it read the ACTUAL system voltage? Just curious, because it never moves, just points dead center.
Should be a real volt meter. If it doesn't move at all, it is probably stuck.
In the old days, there were ammeters, which were really voltmeters reading a small voltage drop across a very low resistance. These would stop working because of corroded contacts, or various other reasons. They actually measured the voltage drop across a section of the wire between the alt and battery.
But if the meter is a volt meter, it should read battery voltage directly, and should deflect when the lights are switched on and off without the engine running.
It will drop down to 8 (lowest point on guage) when the engine is off, but then jumps right to the dead middle while running. Same with the oil guage. I know the oil guage is an idiot guauge, but I just wondered about the voltage one as well.
