Im stumped on this one! The voltage gauge on my '90 is only reading about 10-11 volts. I've tested the battery w/out motor running and get 13.62volts. Starting the motor and checking again, I get over 15. I've had the alt. tested and it fine. The battery is only a few months old, so Im running out of ideas??? I know this is whats causing my truck to be kinda slugish after warmup. so, any help would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks
Sounds like the volmeter you are testing with needs calibration.
It would be very rare for a battery to show more than about 12.5 volts several minutes after the engine is off. So I am thinking your tester is off. You should show between 13.5 and 14.3 volts when charging.
I always use a digital voltmeter for checking battery voltage.
Also your voltmeter gauge is probably off in the opposite direction.
Well, Winfordr your correct. The digital voltmeter that I use was off a little. I took it over to my brother, who is an electrican, and he recalibrated it for me. It now reads 12.14V non-running/ 14.75 running. Okay, next ? How does the dash come off? I dont see ANY screws! I'm assuming they are hidden under the plastic "wood" trim, but thought I'd ask before I pry and break something. Also, if the voltage is low at the gauge, what would cause this?
