Thanks Jack. I was pretty sure that I knew what you meant, but it wasn't clear to me that the OP knew it. I figured I would open the door for some more discussion, but once he said he was going after the glow plugs and didn't seem to be curious about anything else ............ then I figured I would bow out.
EDIT - one last thing ......... Anthony put quite a bit of detail in his series of 8 videos on '03 injector replacement:
I just happened to have some time today, so I stopped in, which is why I said I'm not sure why I'm in the thread.
I couldn't get a good read on this from the OP or the shop. I was just looking at it as the shop tried to fix what it found and a little more with a re-seal. And after the second failure, they had not had the chance to do a re-check. Maybe they're good, maybe not. But they were somewhat proactive.
I couldn't tell he meant hydrolocked in the OP. Thought his batteries were dead or that starter. So when the shop pulled the 2285 but replaced injectors, it sounded odd.
I hadn't seen Anthony's vids, and didn't watch these yet, but he's good and a 7-part vid is prolly pretty detailed.
I would need to download forscan. No the 2285 has not came back but when this issue happened the first time it took a few days for it to pop up. Would just replacing an injector actually clear this code or is it possible that it was cleared by the tech?
1) Check for diesel in your oil.
2) if the tail pipe smells like coolant, it is likely your EGR cooler and not a head gasket. That could be where the white smoke is coming from.
3) The tech had to clear the error codes. or leave the battery cables off a day or so.
Report back if you smell coolant from the tailpipe or diesel in the oil. We can go from there.
It tells me you got your $6 worth from Forscan. It looks like the scroll bar on the right goes down more - are there more codes? I haven't looked up what most of those codes refer to, and I'm pretty ignorant anyway, the others will be more helpful. However, my guess is that it's #5 cylinder that's full of fuel or coolant. The ICP code is just maybe just a result of the hydrolock; it wouldn't cause one, I don't think.
All your passenger-side glow plugs are failing, so prolly wiring, or the connector is not pushed in all the way on the GPCM. Prolly didn't help that #5 cylinder. Those first codes are all sensors on the top front of the engine, likely on the same harness arm. The MAF might just be because you tried to start the truck with the air intake off while messing with stuff. Not likely you would have unplugged the others though.
Have you smelled the tailpipe yet? IMHO, that's where you're next step - figure out whether you got fuel or coolant. If it's coolant, just go straight to replacing the EGR. If you're lucky, it's fuel. If so, I'd pull #5 injector and try to hand turn the engine (loosen the serpentine) to push it out. Check your injector tip - it could have broke off and still be in the cylinder. In that case, you can quit calling yourself lucky.
But, wait for others to chime in. This is just stuff to think about.
Besides for smell is there any other way that I can check for coolant in the fuel? The exhaust smells normal to me. There are more codes I can get a picture later. That’s interesting because injector/cylinder 5 was the one that was “bad” the first time it was repaired. And the same exact thing happened again.
Do it yourself this time. #5 isn't the easiest injector to get to, but basic skills can get it done. Your tech could have used cheap injectors. Go with Ford Remans this time.
Oops, didn't answer your question. You can figure out coolant/fuel by going forward with that process - removing the injector and see what comes out when you turn the engine. Just saying that if it was fuel in the tailpipe, you'd be looking better than if it was coolant. Coolant could be EGR cooler, could be head gasket, could be cracked head. Worst likely case with fuel is, maybe?, a new injector tube. Don't have to remove the heads to do that.
On the left is an injector that I pulled one that was not replaced. On the right side is the brand new injector that was replaced (cylinder 5). O ring is broken and no copper washer.
