2016 tailgate gained weight
My friend has a 2016 F-250, bought it new....but today he told me his tailgate is really heavy all of a sudden. I lifted it and it is difficult,...is their a tension-er spring inside that let go, like a garage door assist spring?

Yep there's a torsion bar of some sort although I've never torn into it.

Yes there is a spring but it isn't serviceable.

If you can fit one of the Hoppy/Hopkins assist bars they work REALLY well
