The new one with the step. Is the lift of this heavier than the non-step tailgate, that is, does this heavier gate have the same spring assist as the lighter tailgate, making it a heavier lift, or have they compensated with a heavier spring to make the lift the same?
Also, anyone know the actual weight of the complete tailgate?
the step system weighs no more than 15 extra pounds. On my new wrok truck i had to remove the system for the line x dealer. all the parts are aluminum and plastic not super heavy.

I suppose thats the 15 lbs extra I'm feeling on this new step gate, as compared to the light lift I remember from the new 2004. Feels like they kept the same spring on the hevier gate. 15 lbs is alot all the way at the edge, your lifting it all, as opposed to only 1/2 of the weight of the tailgate normally, its now at least a 50% heaveir lift if I remember correctly.
Ram air will add to whatever else you've got going on in the intake tract, force fed or normally aspirated. On the super speedway in Fontana I could hit 140+ mph, thats some good "free" (cool) supercharging. It all helps. I call ramair a cowboys supercharger. All my bikes, cars & trucks have it.
Had my tailgate off so I weighed it 86#, feels about 20# heavier than my 99 tailgate
Do you mean feels 20# heavier closing, or dead weight carry?
Thanks for the info. '97-'03 SD tailgate weighs 47#'s (typ for other tailgates)! This truck weight is getting out of hand. No wonder I'm selling so may power tailgates to these new SD customers.
again off topic droptail, i just picked up this magazine today, ford performance trucks, on the cover is a 1500 HP lightning, i can't wait to read about it

It is 86# dead carry weight. With the assist closing it feels a lot less than my 99 did. Wow the original was only 47#. that step up is a lot heavier, but worth it except when taking it off.

No, I meant the comparisonyou said of being 20# diff, dead or closing feel?
I agree, the 2004 assist did feel lighter than the '99, but not this new SD one, its a monster! It almost feels to me like the '99 did when closing. I wouldn't be surprised if the gate is new for the step, and maybe its beefier.

Let me know what you find out? Mine had a little over 500cshp, and you see what it did to sports cars at Fontana Speedway in my video. Three times that sounds wierd.
