And, DEF is injected after the DPF to convert nitrogen oxides (NOx) in to nitrogen, water, and small amounts of carbon dioxide.
The main reason 2023+ use more DEF is to meet the newer and tougher emission standard and there is no way for the MFGs to get around it.
In the direction things are going, they may build a DEF tank 2X of the fuel tank
That reminds me, in the beginning I remember paying $5.95 for a 2.5gal jug of DEF....

If they raise cylinder temperatures it reduces particulate matter and unburnt fuel. This also increase Nox output...and def consumption. It's a bit of a balancing act and of course changing emission standards weigh in as well.

So I filled my DEF tank Tuesday. 100%. I’m running he truck empty, and distance to empty is 1600 miles. Towing I’m at 750 to empty. My 2022 at least got 6000 and 3000 respectively

2023 6.7 DEF Usage

My 2020 F250 6.7, when not pulling anything, I would easily go oil change to oil change, 10,000km (6,000 miles) without having to even look at the DEF gauge. The gauge would normally indicate 15,000km range when full. Tag the fifth wheel on the *** and that's different, I get that.

My new 2023 F350 6.7 is pig on DEF usage. Meanwhile the Exhaust Filter has never gotten above 45% and reads zero most of the time. The Exhaust Filter will show 15% and then go to zero, not 10 and then 5, straight to zero.
When the DEF system is running, you can smell it, it gets hot and it seems to operate non stop.
I did a 1,500km trip this week, all highway running about 110-120kmph, left with 86% DEF and finished with 60% level, Exhaust Filter reads at zero! Crazy.
I log when I add DEF and will compare shortly when I refill the tank.

DEF warning msg, and light

My 2023 was displaying a warning light and MSG, you have 499 miles till empty on DEF, fill soon. WTF. how stupid. I have a half of tank left. I did tow a 5er to the gulf coast, then the light/warning started showing. I followed what one poster said about adding more DEF. I did and it worked. The warning and light went away. But for how long, not sure.

You will continue to get the warning. I top it off my next fill of diesel at loves, pilot or flying j just so I don’t get the annoying warning light.

Two things in play here. DEF is for NOx, It's not for the Particulate Filter. The Particulate filter will do an Active Regen to burn off soot, every 500 miles ( mine actually does it every 497 miles) Regardless of what the filter percentage indicates. It will also do a Passive Regen anytime EGT temps exceed 572° in the particulate filter. DEF on the other hand is used in the SCR to reduce NOx that is created during high combustion temps. Think when you have turbo boost. So there is no direct relationship between the two.

I can frequently watch the passive regens on my truck clean the filter to Zero and then still watch it kick into an Active Regen when I hit the 500 mile magic number. You are not smelling DEF. You can smell your exhaust get hot when your truck does a Regen. That will push your filter temps up over 1100°. The 23's and newer trucks use more DEF than previous trucks because of increased EPA requirements. The problem I've seen with mine, Is it calculates the distance remaining on the worst consumption it has recently seen. Hence if I climb a 14% grade pulling my trailer, It's going to pop up and say 500 miles to empty even though I have over a half tank and probably a 1000 miles left. I do see my HO consuming around 1 gallon of DEF per 350 miles towing my 13,000lbs trailer and around 900 miles per gallon when I'm empty using the truck as a daily driver.
