Good morning. We just got back from a 5000 mile trip. We weighed in at 22500 truck, truck camper and trailer. I used the TSD open roads card to be able to use the Loves truck fuel discount and the larger fueling areas.
Before the trip I noticed that I was useing 5 gallons of DEF for every 3000 miles of travel. My previous 6.7's used about 5 gallons every 5-6000 miles.
During our trip I kept getting the refill DEF message at about 1/2 a tank. Sure enough, every tank of fuel, about 35 gallons, I would have to fill up 2.5 gallons of DEF. This was consistent the whole trip.
Has anyone else had this elevated DEF usage? I pulled the DEF injector and it isn't covered in crystals. It will be going back to the dealer this week.
My 2022 F350, basically the same truck minus the new DPF used way les on a very similar drive in Feb. The 2022 didn't use any more than my 2017 or 2011.
And 2.5 gallons at every fill up seems a bit much.
I am leaving this week with my new 23 Dually , same as yours. Will be pulling a 15k pound horse trailer CA to UT. Will be a 1600 mile round trip. I can already tell this truck uses way more DEF than my 2019. It was full when I left the dealer and it has 600 miles on it now and is down to 79%. I already have 2 boxes ready to go for my trip. lol From everything I have read, this DEF useage is the new normal.
Remember when DEF was first forced upon us we were promised the price of DEF will remain very affordable. Again government not keeping their promises. DEF companies are making billions off our hard work backing, and no support or investigation. I strongly agree with the use of DEF especially if you had some of those old 7.3 that smoked like crazy when pulling 24k like I did.
I just feel again we are getting ripped off and price gouging
I have posted several videos on my channel about DEF consuption and currently about to post 2 more videos about DEF on my 2023 F350. So far it seems inline with my 2020 F350 Standard output diesel. We will be doing around a 1500 mile towing loop the next few weeks and I plan to have a good video discussing that more.
My 23 has just under 2k miles on it now and hasn't pulled anything more than a boat yet. Coming home with boat Sunday it alerted me DEF had 499 miles left so I stopped at a station that has it at pump and filled. I was thinking maybe it never got filled completely when new. Reading this makes me think I'm wrong and its just going to use a lot. My 17 has been deleted for a while so I don't have exact details anymore, but I remember it going a long time on a full DEF tank when was all stock for 100k miles.

Towing my '22 uses way more than my 16 did. Not towing it shows a 4000 mile range.
This truck does very few regens and gets better fuel economy than my '16. No complaints on buy a little extra DEF from me.
On my 2023 have 2300 total miles 600 miles of that towing and have 381 miles till empty showing on my Ford app.
With that being said, My fuel mileage is great compared to my 2017. 70% highway and 30% city so far driving habits and getting 22 mpg. My 2017 was 16 average.
I have a 23 6.7 non HO. I’m coming from a 22 gasser. Just got done with a move from NM to FL and had a 20 mph headwind in NM/west TX pulling a 8K TT. I was getting low def ding notifications like crazy. Being my first diesel I thought it might be abnormal but I guess not after reading this. One plus of the side step is you can rest a jug on your knee when filling up. 😂

Yeah it notifies you WAY early based on usage rate. Mine will start dinging with a half tank of DEF when towing, which is silly as it still has a LONG way to go.

Mine just jumped to 900 miles without me putting any in the tank.
