I have a 2017 that doubles the DEF usage when towing a 33 foot 5th wheel. It has used a gallon in 300 miles when towing in mountains. Two dealers have said nothing wrong and have never heard of this issue....really!

I don't know about doubling usage but my 2017 does use more DEF when towing. Hotter exhaust means more DEF.
They are way too conservative with that warning, it's annoying to have a recurring warning light on the dash when you have plenty of DEF in the tank.
I could be wrong but previous year trucks may have had some issues with the DEF heater. I received advice to just don’t let it get really low. Never had a problem personally, so can’t say if it’s true or not.
I have a 23 6.7 non HO. I’m coming from a 22 gasser. Just got done with a move from NM to FL and had a 20 mph headwind in NM/west TX pulling a 8K TT. I was getting low def ding notifications like crazy. Being my first diesel I thought it might be abnormal but I guess not after reading this. One plus of the side step is you can rest a jug on your knee when filling up. 😂
Did you post a review of the differences in your 22 gasser vs your 23 6.7 HO? I would love to hear your experience.
Anyone know offhand whether or not it will ever be possible to totally replace the EGR system and just run more DEF? My understanding is that they attempt to accomplish the same thing, less NOx. I read some vehicles are totally replacing the EGR by upsizing the SCR system.
Excessive DEF usage.
I have a 2022 6.7 F350 with 15K miles on it
Note: It was ordered in Nov 2021 and delivered in Sept 2022
I just completed a 2500 mile trip and used 12 gallons of DEF.
This is not an acceptable usage rate.
My Previous 2017 and 2011 never had issues like this.
off to the dealer we go.
any thoughts out there?
Good morning. We just got back from a 5000 mile trip. We weighed in at 22500 truck, truck camper and trailer. I used the TSD open roads card to be able to use the Loves truck fuel discount and the larger fueling areas.
Before the trip I noticed that I was useing 5 gallons of DEF for every 3000 miles of travel. My previous 6.7's used about 5 gallons every 5-6000 miles.
During our trip I kept getting the refill DEF message at about 1/2 a tank. Sure enough, every tank of fuel, about 35 gallons, I would have to fill up 2.5 gallons of DEF. This was consistent the whole trip.
Has anyone else had this elevated DEF usage? I pulled the DEF injector and it isn't covered in crystals. It will be going back to the dealer this week.
I just did a 3,000 mile trip with my 2022 towing my 9,500 lb trailer (around 19,000 lbs GCVW) and used approximately 20 gallons of DEF. Before this trip I didn't use any DEF (or not enough to fill) when running empty for the first 5,000 miles of the truck's life.
Anyone know anybody at Ford that will give an honest answer of what the usage should be? And what Ford will do to correct if too much or too little?
I can tell you right now that the answer will be: "usage depends on a host of parameters and will be different for every truck, owner, load, road, temperature, etc. etc. and therefore there is no guideline on what usage should be"......or other verbage with similar meaning. I predict they will do nothing.
