I just bought the relay. I don't think it's necessary to have the prewired end. Your going to use the female insulated terminals anyway, right? I thougfht about the utility lights but like I said, I have a regular cab, I don't think two would be enough and four would be too many. I am going to try the small fogs I bought and if I don't like it, I will get the others and use those. I'll then use the fogs for under bumper reverse lights or something then.
Kind of a complicated project because I can't find the right wire. Did find the #35 fuse, the one that is marked in the manual as instrument panel, shuts off the dome light. That isn't much help though, unless I know which relay that feeds. From the clicks I hear, that is up behind the instrument panel just behind the tach. Not sure I want those lights bad enough to remove the instrument panel to tap into a relay. I'll keep searching though, if/when I learn something, I will let you know. If you find out, please let me know.. Thanks.
Under the passenger side kick panel is a 16 pin connecter. The black with light blue tracer is the one, very easy to access. What was throwing me off was the color of the blue. The right one is more of a royal blue. The one I have been chasing has a greenish tint to the blue. Hope you have better eyes than I do, take your test light. Should be fairly easy from here on out.
Done. Once you find the correct wire for the switch, it is very simple. From start to finish, it took me maybe 50 minutes. It is simple and clean. I will try and get pics tonight and post them to my gallery. Anxious to see how the lights look at night.
Congrats! I have gone as far as to find the wire to tap into. Have not bought the lights or the relay yet. Could you tell me what lights and relay you went with?
Thanks!
went back and re-read some of the old posts. Now I just wonder what relay you used.
Will have to run out and start on mine,
looking forward to the pics.
Thanks, and have a great weekend,
Jim
I posted to flat rate tech. A place where Ford techs hang out and answer questions.
It really is easy. There is even an opening at the firewall right there. Just tap your line and run it directly out that opening. I don't think it could get any easier. Most of the time on this project was spent finding out where that damn wire was. I spent more time researching that, than doing the actual installation.
Interior lights are a +12V black wire w/blue tracer. You can find this in the kick panel. (This is from 80's - present, I believe). It will turn hot when any door is opened, and should return to 0 v when dome light is off..
How do you remove the kick panel on the passenger side? And is this needed? I would imagine that you do have to take it off. I found my black/blue wire right under the power distro box. You think the kick panel is the better place to tap into this?
Did you test the wire you found to make sure it's hot with the dome light on? I would imagine that either place is fine as long as you are behind the relay (ie) don't have a constant hot.
The kick panel pops off. On mine, I had a plastic pin that held it on from the side, I just pried that off, lifted the sill and popped the panel the rest of the way off.
Pictures didn't come out all that great. If I could figure out how to post them, I would. They are much brighter than the pictures show. I'll dig around the gallery info and see if I can't get them posted.
Pics are in the gallery. Had to go buy a cheapie digital camera, took pics in the lot of the store. If you want clairification, or more pics, let me know.
Very nice hang10! I have not done it yet.................
Still kinda procrastinating. I still have not decided what kind of lights to use. I am leaning toward the tractor utility lights. So you think that the kick panel tap is the way to go? I have an 01, you think mine is the same as yours?
After I got under there and started mounting them, I am glad I went with what I did. I really don't know where I would have mounted the utility lights. The passenger side, frame is pretty much taken up by the exhaust. That is if you waned to mount inside the frame. If not, I don't know how I would have attached them, or run the wiring. The little fogs are a lot brighter than I thought, I'm happy with them.
I don't know. If yours is set up like mine, all I can say is the kick panel area is very easy and as you saw by the pictures, running to the engine compartment through that grommet is easy. I zip tied the switch wire to the brake line, then straight to the relay. That was the easiest of all (next to the battery) to do. It will be easier than you think once you get started on it.
