Ok, I bought my truck used.
It had running boards, but are gone.
The wires are still there, from where the lights were.
I don't get any power to them????
I used a test light, and opened the door. But no power?
I don't have a manual.
And I looked, and tested all the fuses under the dash.
All are good.
I dont' have a owners manual.
Could it be one of the fuses under the hood???
does anyone know what fuse I should check on????
Any info would be great!
Thanks!!!!
I'm not as familar with the running board lights but if all the fuses are ok and any usable open holes in the fuse brick have a good fuse in it. Did you look for missing relays? I might try to trace the wire back and see where it leads to or if it has been cut some where.
I am at a kind of impasse here. I found the trailer lights like the one guy used, I like the way those looked in the picture he provided. However, for roughly the same price, I can get two 55W halogen fog lights that would mount easier than 4 trailer lights. The fogs could be aimed (to an extent), whereas the trailer lights are pretty much straight down. The fogs give off a slightly amber hue, which may, or may not be okay. The only way to know is to mount and see, then it's too late.
I don't expect anyone to tell me which to use, just random thoughts that if anyone has a pro or con thought either way, or any input, might make the decision easier. Whatever happened to that other guy anyway? Did we run him out with too many questions?
Same sort of thoughts here also, liked the area covered by the grote lights, but also like the more finished look of fog lights.
One thought I had would LED lights draw less current and be a better choice? Looking at the price of them dont seem that bad - maybe twice the price of the grote lights - but I dont know if you would get the same candle power out of them.
Thanks everyone for the input on this post, been a great help and great education.
I went ahead with the fogs. I figure that if I don't like them, I can always use the others later. I have a regular cab so four lights may be a bit much anyway. Plus I got these fogs for $12.00 and it came with the relay, fused link and most of the other wiring I'll need. All with preinstalled terminals. Makes it pretty much plug & play. I'll probably do this Wed or so.
Mike: Thought about your input on LED and of course see what you mean and agree, would be kinda defeating the purpose to put everything in and not have enough light.
Hang10: Let me know how it goes and where you got the fog lights. Weather here outside of Chicago puts a damper on what I can get done since I dont have a place to get the truck inside.
I got the fog lights at Oreilly auto parts, on sale. A brand called 'Blazer xtream.' Extreme is spelled that way. My only challenge is going to be finding the right place for the switch line. From his diagram and my ownwers manual, they must have laid these relays out totally different. I am assuming it is the 'delayed accessories' relay.
These that I bought have some supposedly new 3M adhesive that will stick to anything, at any temp, wet or dry. I am going to use that. I will find out in fairly short order if it works or not.
Running one relay from another is done to keep from increasing the load current throught the first relay. By using a relay that is already present the only extra load the first relay sees is the coil current of the second relay which is typically very much smaller than even one twelve light bulb.
yes that is the idea. If you know the resistance of the coil you can calculate the approx. amount of current that relay requires to energize. I say approx amount becuase the pull in current is different from the continuous current. but never mind that I'm going off on a tangent.
I was thinking either the lower flange right above the running board - noticed there are some holes pre-drilled and either have them mounted inside of the flange or if more of a finished look on the outside - if I dont like this arrangement was going to look into the skid plate arrangement.

If you have an 03 with a gas motor, good luck finding the relay that controls the dome light. You can't even find a fuse for the dome light. I hear the relay click when the dome is off and on but it sounds like it's behind the instrument panel. Very strange set up. I guess I'll just forget this mod and use the fogs that I bought as fog lights.
Hang10:
Got an 04 with gas motor - have not gotten that yet to look for the relay........crawled underneath earlier to scope out mounting places and was thinking of returning the small fogs I bought and use tractor utility lights instead.
Hmmm, wonder if one could find the wire to the doors and tap the relay in there?
One headache I did have was finding a relay, PEP Boys had the relay part but not the part with the wires that slide over the posts - could only get that with buying a complete light harness.
Oh well, will keep thinking about this mod.
Have a great Thanksgiving,
Jim
