What's the secret on this late 70's windshield trim?

Attached a couple before and after pics below but here's the rundown. Bought all new "chrome" to go around the windshield from LMC. I figured this job wont take but a minute as it looks like you just pull the chrome out and then put the new back in. Boy was I wrong!

The old strip pulls out fine but it took me over an hour to get that one side piece back in using a ton of dish soap and damn near rubbing my fingertips off. So, frustrated as all hell, I make the financial decision to put this monkey on someone else's back and replace the windshield - it has a couple cracks/chips in it and I'm pretty sure its the original glass. If this 18" piece gave me all this trouble, I cant even imagine trying to do the top and bottom pieces especially when I obviously can't sit on the hood or lay on the roof to get to the very middle parts.

So I start calling around to windshield places but now there's a new problem because the companies I call either won't touch a vehicle this old (don't even know how!) or they ask me about this chrome trim. One guy said they were able to replace the windshield no problem but never could get the trim back in on the last one they did.

So, what's the secret to installing this stuff?

Get the tool made for it, yes corners get a bit fussy. Nylon glass sticks for corners, soapy water and or a little armour all, it's easy to do. Maybe some video's on the tube. We liked those glass channels at the glass shop for tinting. Take your time, the shops and the tool I have came from snap on truck, many other versions on market now. Nylon glass sticks at any body shop supply house or web shops. 1 will last you a lifetime. The vinyl chrome lock strip shrinks over time, cut itlong and cover with corner pieces.

Yea much easier to do when replacing windshield as its installed before the seal is put on the glass. I know they make a tool like this
Amazon Amazon
Can't be sure if it will work with the chrome trim. Hopefully someone else will confirm.

Original windshield, this was last year after repaint concerning re-install. Glass was taken out ...put in ...taken out ... put in... taken out ...put in again but now just a solid rubber seal. Very pleased that the glass was not broken.

Well I have a couple hours in it and still no go, and the chrome mylar is already peeled like in places, so I have decided to just let him order a solid, no chrome strip one and try again. He said he liked them better anyway. I had gone with the lock strip kind first because was what was in it OEM, but then when the mylar goes south, turns white, looks like crap, not to mention it shrinks over time.

At least I made it look no worse.
The LMC was as good as the Premier it seems, the Premier might have been softer. Glass guy says there will not be any such issue with the solid Premier that he gets.

07-10-2022: Solid rubber is at the glass shop, Eddie is gonna do it in the morning after I drop the truck off.

If I decide later that I want trim, I'll maybe stick a narrow bead of it to the glass next to the rubber He got it done 07-11-2022, looks nice.

Not sure but I think the solid was last offered in 76, maybe 77 on Custom, Later came with locking strip, but it was black and corners are black painted stainless. Anything better to install than the hard stainless wide trim from the early years. Looked classy but pita.
