Thicker style windshield chrome

My buddy and I have had/recycled many many of the dentside trucks. Never had we seen this style of windshield trim. Is it unusual, or just dumb luck we hadn't seen any before ?

IIRC, the wide trim is correct for '73-'77 and the narrow trim is for '78-'79? My '74 has the wide trim:

After a wash, a new bumper, and tires/hubcaps

This came off a loaded 79 Supercab 4x4. Not sure if it was stock, but it'd been on there a LONG time.....

I can't post a close-up pic right now cuz my other half has just took off in the truck to go to work, but I have that same wide chrome trim on my windshield. You should be able to make it out in my gallery pics...

My truck is a 73 Camper Special/Ranger XLT, with all the original aluminium side moldings etc, presumably part of the trim package when it was new.

Incidentally, it seems that windshield installers are afraid of this trim, since they automatically increase the price as soon as they find out that trim is present.

I can't say for sure, but the '78-'79s I've seen with windshield trim had the narrower trim:

And the LMC catalog lists the windshield rubber that's compatible with wide trim as being for '73-'77 while it lists the rubber that's compatible with narrow trim as for '78-'79, but that's not necessarily a guarantee that the wide trim couldn't have been an option on the later years. Maybe one of the part numbers guys can chime in on that?

Correct. They quit putting this trim on in '77. I went through this same thing on my '78 when I restored it. The trim is actually not REAL rare. The junk yard where I get my parts from has a lot of trucks with this trim on it. I actually just pulled some off today from a truck for a '77 crew cab I'm starting on. I went ahead and put it on my '78 cause it covered up the ugly rubber. Number Dummy gave me a hard time for it, but I didn't care. I'm a sucker for shiny stuff and I wasn't all crazy about it not being period specific. In '78 and '79, they went to a thinner chrome trim that went into a groove in the rubber. To each their own, but I'd still put it on

With the wide trim you have to get the windshield rubber seal that will let you use it. And it can be a PITA to put on a new seal....

I would be interested in the trim if you decide to part with it. My 73 CC is pretty plain and I need to replace the windshield anyway so I would like to add the trim when I do. PM me if you would sell it. Thanks

My '77 has narrow trim, but I've seen many Dents with the wide trim and I prefer it. If I ever do renew it it'll be wide trim or no trim.

I'm in the process of removing all the original brightwork from my truck, with the exception of the grille surround and the bumpers and a few other pieces. Thinking about whether or not to keep that windshield trim, it's one of the chrome features I actually like on the truck (it's mostly the overly-ornate crown molding along the sides I don't care for).

I don't actually know what it would look like without any chrome around the windshield. Anyone have a pic?

It's just black rubber instead of chrome.

Here's a pic, courtesy of Bing image search:

Interesting... thanks! If anything, I almost think it makes the windshield look larger

The wide stainless steel moulding is correct for '73-mid '77 trucks, it was a mid year change. The narrow plastic trim is correct for late '77-79.
All years also had windshields with no trim. There are three different windhsield weatherstrips available, the wide trim, correct for 73-mid 77, narrow trim, correct for mid 77-79 and no trim, correct for all years.
Also, Ford offered a brown windshield weatherstrip that was exclusively used on the '77 trucks that came with the XLT "luxury" group. Trucks with this option also had brown vinyl inserts in the racetrack trim.
