windshield moldings...

on my 1968 f 100 there is chrome trim around the windshield and the rear window. i need to replace the rubbers on both windows....what is the best way to change the rubbers without bending and tearing up the chrome? the chrome is probably aluminium, or stainless.... and does anyone have a part number for those rubbers? thanks guys.

You just gently pull out the trim. Is your windshield still good? I had a glass company do it, but I needed a new windshield. They used glass cleaner to lube the gasket and slid in the trim from the outside inward. Make sure that the trim doesn't slip out. It took 2 guys 1.5 hours to do mine.

The easiest to get the chrome out without risking bending it is cutting the rubber on the inside of the truck and setting the windshield out. Then you can just pull the rubber away from the chrome with no risk of damaging it.

I was told that the rubber comes both ways, one with a groove for the stainless trim and one without the groove. The windshield should be the same as the back window, install the stainless trim first before installing window in the truck. I installed the window without trim, not good as the window has to come out to install the trim.

It's hard to do...I had a friend that owns a glass shop come and help put mine it. Had to put the chrome in first, like Beemer said, which is hard enough in itself. Then we had to tape the chrome in the rubber until it was in the truck. Then just take the tape off.

The wife helped me on the back window the first time, I used .090" weed eater line to pull the rubber lip inside the cab with the help of the wife keeping pressure on the outside with dish soap, a easy job. The windshield I would try only after watching the "Pros" install one before I attack that one.

With a keg of suds we can give you another headache.

Keg....(noun)....crunchy on the outside, yummy on the inside.
