I have a 2000 4r70w with 170,000 miles. The person before me who had the vehicle said it was slipping when accelerating and eventually stopped moving all together. I notice the transmission engages when I put it in any gear as the rpm drops like normal but it just doesn't move anywhere. I've also noticed once I try to accelerate, transmission fluid leaks quite a bit out from where the transmission meets with the engine/where the torque converter is. Trans fluid is pretty dark and smells burnt. Could this be a bad torque converter or something with the transmission itself?

The RPM drops because the PCM commands a lower RPM when you move the shift handle to OD. It doesn't matter if the trans engages or not, the RPM will come down. Listen to jk080. He knows what he's talking about.
