No, you shouldn't tow in OD. More than likely your problem was caused by old worn out fluid. The fluid is only good for about 30,000 miles. If you run on bad fluid you strain everything else in the trans.
Dealer says it is the TC. It would buck and holler when it kicked down so bad that we took it out of cruise to avoid kick downs and limped home. Basically felt like a miss the rest of the time
From your description of the problem I do not think it is your torque converter per-say, maybe the T/C lockup solenoid, but that is yet to be determined. In the meantime sit down and take a gander at this U-Tube, you may better understand how the T/C works.
It is a hydraulic clutch and as such either works or not.
