Ignition for 1978 460 into 1964 F250

Need some advice. I do not have any of the Duraspark components from the 78 donor. Since I'm starting from scratch, what is the most simple option and the most budget friendly? Can I eliminate the ICM and run another distributor with points? If so what distributor can you recommend?

Again, looking for a cheap simple option just to get it running... for now.

not sure what you mean by cheap but easiest is to add a MSD box to your duraspark dist. They even sell the adapter jumper wire. Hooks one end to dis other end to msd box.

Looking for low cost option. As of now I don’t even have a distributor or anything. I’m doing my first engine rebuild, so getting it running is my goal for now. Is there a points distributor from another year/motor that will fit?

You can use any pre 1974 points distributor for a 429, 460 also the 351 Cleveland and the 400 all use the same distributor as the 385 series engines. The cheapest way is to get a reman or a new made in China one. No matter which of those you use be certain the end play is correct. I have run across two distributors that had the gear on wrong and were holding the gear up off of the pad. Be sure you get a coil for a points distributor as they are not the same as the ones for an electronic distributor.
Set the plugs to .032-.036
There is nothing wrong with using a points distributor as long as you don't mind doing a little maintenace every now and then. and you can always put a pertronix module in there if you want to eliminate the points.
Use this to check the end play.

460 Ford Forum Try this site to learn more about 460 Ford engines. I have used HEI distributors for years without difficulty. These distributors have an enclosed coil and electronic control modules. This is a plug and play solution to your missing distributor problems. These distributors sell on ebay for less than $100.00. Before you install this engine, that you have not ran, I suggest you ground start it to be sure it is usable.
Engine swaps are a tough way to start learning about these old Fords. Do you have an engine in he truck now? If you have an engine in the truck and if it is repairable or can be replaced with the same engine, I would do that. Later as time and funds are available you can always do the engine swap. I'd just try to get your truck up and running with what you have. Changing the power train in a 1964 F250 over to a 460 will cost thousands and take months. I speak from personal experience.

Points dist should be dime a dozen. Where are you located? I prob have 6 extra and would give you one if you were close by.

You should put your location in posts so people know where you are at.

1968-73 429/460 or as someone mentioned the 351m/400

FD15 from oreilly still good number 84.88 each for a new one with cap and vacuum advance
