I am currently getting no spark on my 460, and I have come to believe it is the magnetic pickup in the distributor. I'm planning to replace the whole distributor as I have no idea how old it is anyway.
A local parts store told me they need this information to get me the right distributor...
I am also noticing these same differences on distributors that Rock Auto has available
- Single or Dual Vacuum
- Electronic ignition (yes/no)
- With or without governor
Just looking for help figuring out these details to make sure I buy the right thing.
Why not just replace the pick up coil it's easy. be warned the replacements are junk and failures are common, but the new distributor will have the same one so you're gaining nothing. If the gear on your distributor is good it's better than the Chinese one that will be on the rebuilt one and it's matched to your cam gear.
If you really want a rebuilt unless you're running all the smog equipment you want a single vacuum , electronic, no governor one.
Have you ruled out the Dura spark box? If that’s good then have you checked the actual coil for spark? If it’s the Halifax sensor in the distributor. As you’re cranking it with the key when you let off the key and it does a little blip like it’s trying to fire then that is the Halifax sensor in the distributor.
I never had any symptoms of a failing Duraspark module. I parked the truck, and it hasn't started since. Never stalling or ignition problems before. Also, not getting the blip when I stop cranking either.

And who knows if the gear will be pressed on in the exact position it needs to be on the shaft so it won't chew the cam gear and the engine block to pieces as well.

The Dura spark module can just fail with no signs it can just be dead. And if you’re not getting the blip when you let off the key your distributor module is probably fine so I wouldn’t replace that. It’s either gonna be your coil or your Dura spark module. If it’s been sitting for a while it could be something as simple as a chewed wire from a rodent. Or even corroded cap and rotor.
So just to explain a few things on the back story here...
My original issue started with a failed fuel selector valve, so the engine was not getting fuel. Got the truck hauled home and parked it. I bypassed the selector valve, so I could run the truck till I got to fixed right, and I have fuel at the carburetor now. But I've never got in the truck to start since originally parking it. That was 5 or 6 months ago.
My fuel issue is temporarily fixed, but I obviously have an electrical problem.
I already replaced the coil, and have power there. But there's no current in the distributor. This is the story and diagnosis prior to starting this thread.
Have you gone through the ignition testing process? I had to do that with mine and it was a huge help with finding what was the cause of mine...which turned out to be the pickup in the dizzy.
