I am in the process of rebuilding a 73 460 for my 1979 pick-up. This will be a all purpose truck (dailey driver, hauling, towing, etc.). I was wondering if I should change out the distributor or keep the stock one. If you suggest to change out the stock, whick distributor do you recommend?
Thanks!
You should be fine with the stock distributor. In my opinion the best ones are MSD, but they are pricey. Have you thought about getting an MSD ignition box, provides more spark and more reliable than the old ignition. If you have the money you can get the distributor, box, and coil which will give youy a little more power. All I lack is the distributor, but its coming soon.
Hope this helps

Yeah, I did think about replacing the whole system. I am doing the motor now, and when it is time to put it in my truck, I will most likely update the whole system.
i agree with the msd coversion. check out the billet distributor, it doesnt have a vacuum advance, just mechanical which i think is nice, and you just plug it straight into a msd ignition box. for the box i think the 6al is best, especially if you have a manual. with its built in rev limiter it can save you from revvin the motor out the @$$ if you should happen to break somethin. good luck, its expensive, trust me i know.
Does the original have points? If it does, then yes, change it out. I would just find one that has electronic ignition, make sure it uses the blue tab module (its the cheepest to replaice and simple to change over) the wiring between the module and the dist., and the coil for it.Not only will it work better and less to maintain, but it will make it more consistant to what a 79 truck had originally.
