1986 460 distributor into 76 F100

LAST EDITED ON 21-May-01 AT 07:28 AM (EST)[p]Just got the 460 engine delivered this weekend and the C-6 tranny! Will give y'all pix later on my web site. Killer engine; will install in a few weeks. I have a question about the distributor wiring and am not sure this is the right forum, so don't plunder me too badly...

The '86 460 naturally has electronic ignition and the '74 six cylnder has mechanical points. I am going to "update" the distributor anyway to either a Mallory or Accel with matching ignition module. How can I get the two different wiring systems to match? Anybody ever tackled something similar? Since the truck and electrical system is '74 model, would I just order the distributor upgrade for a '74 460 engine, even though the engine is really an '86 model? This truck is not used in a pollution controlled state...

Hoping you can help or point in the right direction,

Mark with his new 460...

Mark, you have two realistic choices here. Get a duraspark dist. for a 75 or 76 460 and wire that in, or even easier, get a points dist for a 68-74 460 and upgrade it with the pertronics ignitor. Lots of the guys are very happy with their pertronics and they are fairly simple to put in, no muss, no fuss. The aftermarket distributers are all e$pen$ive and don't do any thing the factory distributer can't. Save your $$ and spend it on something else. DF
