I am rebuilding a Ford 460 for my 81 F-250 and I was wondering what kind of aftermarket distributor would be good for this application. Can I use an electronic advance or do I need something with vaccum advance.
Thanks,
Matt Churches Reno, NV
Since that old of a truck is not computerized, I'd stick with a vacuum advance model. There are a number of good replacements shown in a "Jegs" or "Summit" mail order catalog...my preference would be a multi-spark unit such as "MSD". Also if your building for power keep in mind that Ford engines are typically "weak" on the exhaust side. Ford kept changing the 460 heads and the exhaust ports got smaller in the late 1980's...install dual exhaust at least and headers if there within your budget.
Thanks Deen,
What I have is an MSD PN 8580 I think with MSD coil (Blaster 2) and MSD 6 ignition control. The distributor comes with springs and it has a mechanical advance. Can I use this distributor or do still need a vaccuum advance?
PS. I do have headers and dual exaust.
Matt, you can use that distributor. The difference between mech. and vacuum advance is that mechanical are usually used more for racing where your advance is determined by RPM. A vacuum advance changes your timing based on engine load. Vacuum would be more accurate for street use and part throttle conditions but I doubt if you would notice any drastic improvement by replacing your mechanical dist. with the vacuum model. I currently run a mech. dist. in my drag/street corvette with no problems ( it also has an MSD 6A) Deen
You can use an electronic advance if you get a module to match it. As far as the distributor itself, your best bet would be to look for a distributor for a 351 Cleveland that is what you want and use it. The Cleveland family and 385 family use the same type of ignition system. I know this because I pulled a 351-M for a 460 and used my old distributor. The 351-M is part of the Cleveland family, along with the 400-M. If you get a vaccum advance, be sure that is single and not dual advance.
