Need a paint job?

I'm thinking about repainting my truck. It's got a lot of peeling paint and clear coat. Lot of scratches and dings. I have a couple of people in my family that paint vehicles. They have a shop and everything and I'm welcome to use it to paint my truck and they will walk me through it doing all the Bondo work and everything to get rid of all the dents that won't pull out. That being said, I'm sticking with the factory color of paint. This is going to be a project because it's going to be expensive to do it. So I wanted to get some opinions on this brand of paint I found that has Ford Z1 Oxford White. Has anybody ever used this stuff before?

I’m no painter but I’d probably consider using whatever materials the folks who are training you are familiar with.

Whenever I’m doing a little paint work (rarely) I use the recommendation of my in-laws who sell paint products at their part store.

If these family members have a paint booth, are willing to guide you let you use it, I'd take advantage of that. I'd also ask them what brands of paint they are familiar with and recommend. Any automotive paint dealer can mix Ford's Oxford White, it helps to have someone familiar with quirks of the brand/product of paint used. They will probably also have you using spray guns, not rattle cans which will result in a better finish.

I'll tell you that I wish I had someone in my family like that. I've got a few that will need paint in the coming years.

Well, I'm not going to dive too deep into it but, my grandfather has cancer and probably doesn't have much time left to live but was really excited about me painting my truck and said I was welcome to use his shop to do it and he's painted vehicles for years and years. He has a very high-end spray gun and a 120 gallon air compressor. He's got very nice stuff but the problem is he can no longer get up and get around. Not for very long at a time. He personally uses finish one paint. Only problem is, like every other automotive paint it is ridiculously pricey. It's going to cost me probably $700 in paint, clear coat, primer, and activators to do my truck. And really, I'm not too worried about the paint of my truck but, at the same time while my grandpa is still here and is so excited to help me paint my truck, I feel like I should take advantage for not only my benefit but for his excitement and benefit as well.

I figure 1 gallon of primer, 1 gallon of paint, and 1 gallon of clear coat ought to take care of my regular cab long bed. I wouldn't think I would need any more paint than that. We do have a Sherwin-Williams right up the road. I might drop in and see how much a gallon of Oxford White will run me. Really, the only messed up pain I have is my front fenders and Hood but if I'm going to do that I might as well paint the whole truck. Being as I'm sticking with the same color it makes things a lot easier as well. I don't have to paint in between the cab and bed, I don't have to take the doors apart or any of that.

I really do want to spend some quality time with my grandpa before he goes which, nobody knows when that will be.

As someone who's in the middle of a diy paint job, uhg. However long you expect it to take, triple the time. However much you expect it to cost, double it.

Unless you are getting a lot of help with the sanding and bodywork the hours will really add up getting it right. You'll spend almost a day taping/masking it up unless you get experienced help on that part. Pulling the bed to get between the cab and bed will add more time, but you'll notice it if you don't.

I actually love painting. I completely detest and actually hate the prep work involved to actually apply paint. Whether it's something as simple as painting a room or outside of a house, I'll paint all day long. The prep work and equipment cleanup just takes any fun out of the entire job

Cool deal, get in there and paint! I’ve always been partial to PPG car paints and Omni clear but like someone suggested earlier, use whatever set of chemicals they prefer there at the shop as there are lots of good brands

I'd use what ever the shop uses...it's just easier when you know the product and have the proper reducers on hand.

Word to the wise: move all the other vehicles out of the DIY paint booth (in my case tarp curtains in the garage) to prevent overspray reaching them.

Luckily this is a full size mechanic shop. If there weren't any tools you could probably park 10 trucks in there.
