Urethane paint pointers?

Hello all, I was hoping you might be able to inform me about what I want to look out for regarding having our truck repainted with urethane paint. Thanks, Rick

basecoat clearcoat paint with a urethane clear is pretty much what is mainly used in most bodyshops except the cheapy places. It is durable and long lasting. I guess all I can say is look for a good brand like ppg or dupont, and a lifetime warrenty. I the bodyshop is certified by there paint company they should be able to offer a lifetime warrenty on the paint against fading, peeling, and other things if they use the paint companys complete system. Also look for certifications from icar and maybe from refinishing classes thier paint company offers. If they do a proper job prepping and repairing and use the paint properly, a urethane paint job should last a long time. It also helps if you get references before choosing a shop.

If you plan to do it yourself I would suggest going with a colour coat/clear coat system. I have painted a dozen or so vehicles over the years and always used a single step urethane paint until last year because I thought the base/clear system sounded too technical for a home style paint job. Last year I decided to try the base/clear system on a motorcycle I repainted and to my delight I found the system to be VERY easy to use and forgiving as well. I had zero issues with runs etc on the base coat and the one run I had on the clear coat was easily flattened out with a fine frit paper followed by a final 1500 grit sanding and then a quick buff and polish with the Norton ICE buffing system.
