Brakes aren’t optional equipment. I doubt many buyers consider a trucks fully loaded stopping distance from 60 mph when purchasing a truck. I don’t have a clue how my truck would compare to a new Ram or GM …. or even to a Ford from 10 years ago.

In this case brakes are optional equipment... if you want the hydro boost brakes you must get the correct model and trim, otherwise you get the vacuum brakes.

And I figured in braking distance by getting a truck that would fit my needs. Sure, I didn't know exact numbers such as stopping distance, but I knew what my weights were that I would be towing and made sure those numbers were within the specs for the truck I bought.

And thankfully, I was able to rent a 2020 Ford and a Ram almost back to back and pulled my camper 4000 miles with the Ford and 2000 miles with the Ram, so I was able to somewhat compare them. Both stopped my set up fine but I liked the Ford better overall.

Do you homework on what model gets hydro. I did. The trim levels were fluff to me, what counted was all under the body stuff. 350 long bed , super cab or crew cab. So for , at the time, $800 difference got goodies plus hydro going from a 250 to a 350.

Ford either believes that the SD’s that are not offered with hydro boost brakes don’t need them or Ford is just trying to cut costs.

Ford increased the maximum towing capacity of the 2023 F250’s, it will be interesting to see if they still only come equipped with a vacuum boosted braking system.
