So after using some red LED bulbs from West Coast Classic Cougar, which Don highly recommended, I put them in my Mustang and the tail lights were noticeably brighter vs bulb. I then switched out the flasher and installed his yellow ones up front and all was fine. So I went to my 65 truck. The tail lights aren't the brightest as we know. Well these were a big improvement in the light, the stop light, and the signal. Had already installed an electronic flasher so I now installed the yellow bulbs for the parking lights. Lights on, great. Blinker on, what the! It seems both front signals run at the same time while the rears are fine. So I went through all the wire connections and grounds up front to make sure they were clean and used a little DeOxit. They were fine but in the end the same result. The turn signal switch is also new from years ago. Now I'm a bit stumped by this. Over the weekend I may get around to the Cougar itself to see what happens although other Cougar owners have done fine with the same LEDs.
Ok, I 'll have to try disconnecting that turn signal indicator in the Custom Cab dash as the signals worked normally when the original 1157 bulbs. The brightness of the tail lights is too good to give up over how relatively dim they were to start with. Yesterday, at twilight, I stepped on the brakes and the whole garage door lit up in bright red. When it was the bulbs I would have to get out and check function, with my son in the truck, after installing the booster and dual master.
Interesting that the Mustang, with two indicators in the dash, doesn't exhibit this issue.
If it works fine LED rear and standard front, why not leave it this way?
I did not read the link of the earlier thread. On some motorcycles they would get the issue you have. I believe a diode or two was needed for the front to correct the problem.
Are you sure you have an LED rated signal flasher? I went LED in my '62 with what I thought was the correct electronic flasher. Signal came on but no blink. Bought another flasher that had better reviews and all was well. Now I actually have rear lights that can be seen and bright turn signals
Yes. The led bulbs do not draw enough on this flaser. The old flashers would build heat from amps and brake contact (flash). The flashers for LEDs wit be a lot lower also they on a timer. Hope this helps.
I'm guessing you had started with a Standard Cab (i.e. not a Custom Cab). The issue only happens with the Custom Cab and how it is initially wired differently.
