Felt this coming on for a few days now. Truck seems to be slipping when shifting into drive. Park, neutral, and reverse are all there and sometimes drive. When it does catch drive it seems like it doesn’t want to. RPMs go up higher than usual and it doesn’t want to go anywhere, until she gets going, then it’ll drive. If I give it gas, try to kick it down, again, doesn’t want to catch. Likes to bang into gear also, but I’ve become used to that.
So, my question is, where do I begin troubleshooting? It’s a 1991 F150 4.9L E4OD.
It can't be the torque converter. The torque converter doesn't know if the trans is in drive or reverse, so how would it work in reverse but not in drive? The answer is that it is impossible to be the torque converter. My SWAG is that you have a failing forward clutch.
Mark, thanks for your input! I did read the codes and the one that seems as tough it may be related is the 628 Excessive converter clutch slippage.
The definition of that code leaves something to be desired. It says torque converter clutch slippage, but in reality, it can be any clutch slipping. The system isn't good enough to determine which clutch is slipping.
What does the trans fluid look and smell like? Red, brown, black? Does it have a burnt odor?
