Ignition control questions

Hey all,
I am working on build my ford 300 and I'm thinking about switching up some things. First off, the engine is "built", It has a cam, bigger valves and all the other basic things. A while ago the stock ignition box failed so I put an A-team HEI distributer in it off of amazon. Now I'm thinking about switching to a Holley sniper Either the stealth or the super sniper and hopefully get a turbo on it by the end of the year. but I'm worried about timing. will what I have work, or do I need something like the MSD that can retard timing per pound of boost, or should I just get a programable box?

Any recommendations or tips would be awesome!

When you say "built" did you raise the compression?
If so you may want to rethink the tubo and any kind of boost adder.
A motor built where boost will be added is a low compression motor to start or compression gets to high and you start blowing head gaskets, etc.

As for the EFI and the dist., part of the issue from what I seen posted is the EFI computer wants to control timing and the HEI unit is a stand alone unit that controls its own timing so the 2 will be fighting each other.
You need a dist. that you can lock the timing on so the EFI computer can control it.
I also believe you should dial back timing as boost goes up, dose the EFI system have a input for this?
If not then you may need to run the EFI timing into a dial back box then to the dist.

What year was the factory dist. you pulled to go with the HEI dist.?
If it was from a feed back system or EFI they you could run it as that dist. is locked from the factory and the computer adjust timing just get a new module.

The Sniper has the ability to control the timing.
The 1992 to 1996 ford 4.9 TFI distributors can be used to trigger the Sniper, then the Sniper will trigger the ignition system like an MSD 6A
The Sniper can be programed to retard the timing according to boost.

As FuzzFace pointed out, the engines compression ratio will need to be low, less than 9:1 in order to turbocharge with any amount of boost.

What is the present compression Ratio?
What cam are you using?

Thanks for the replies. I'm not sure what exactly my compression ratio is, but I'm using a ProMaxx cylinder head with 73cc chamber and the pistons are EFI style. As for the cam I'm using a comp cam 212. The original dist. was out of a 79 but I had the original ignition box go bad twice, so I switched to the HEI

if you didn't deck the block the compression ratio should be around 8.5.

Use the 1992 to 1996 4.9 EFI distributor to trigger a Super Sniper 2300 and have the Sniper trigger an MSD 6A ignition box.
This will give you full control of the ignition timing.
The Super Sniper 2300 is good for 600 hp under boost.

How much boost are you planning on running?
How much horsepower do you want?

Just a guess if using the EFI pistons I think the stock compression is like 8.0:1 to 8.5:1 and if you will be adding boost I think will be to much but I am not up on boost motors.

Well both the 79 and the HEI will not work with the EFI system you want to run.
You can use the TFI dist. from 83 (feed back system till 87 that went EFI) on up as the computer controls timing.
Or you can take either old dist. and lock the timing.

On the 2 boxes that went bad was 1 old and the other new low end unit?
FYI the parts stores sell a low end and high end box and unless you ask for the high end you will get the low end one and it may not last.
I am running a NAPA high end for a year now without issues.

I plan on hopefully running around 10PSI of boost. Powernation got up to 13 with no problem and another youtuber I've seen do a similar build says he is running around 12, so I'd say 10 should be on the safe side. As for Hoursepower I don't really have a goal.

Is Holley part# 558-305 all I would need to go from the EFI dist to the sniper then?

No. The 558-305 harness is for the port injected EFI systems.
