I'm looking to upgrade my ignition system in my 84 f150, 351, 4x4, i have hookers, an eldelbrock 650 4bbl w/ manifold and a bigger cam. I was wondering what you guys thought was the best plug, wire, module and coil combo to put in it, pretty much the most power i can get for a reasonable price. Thanks Alot.
I'm looking to do the same thing for my 86 F-250 with a 460. I'm looking at Jacob's Ignition systems for the answer. I saw it at Summit Racing for $340 for the whole thing.
I'm staying away from MSD because I've heard of way too many problems with them failing after just a couple of months.
People who have problems with msd's usually get them wet or improper handing/abuse of some sorts (their customer service is very good as well).
But I would goo with an accel distrubutor with a built in modular and one of their super coils, then a set of ford racing 9MM wires. This is the route i went and i have been so very happy with it. Best part is that i only have three wires to deal with on the dizzy, and it really cleans up the engine bay (take a look in my gallery of my flareside). You can get all of the things i listed through summit for something like 300 even.
I run around 500 horsepower on the street and in the woods. I use a Mallory unilite to trigger the ignition. Connected to this is a MSD 6AL that fires the Mallory coil. I also use a MSD Timing computer to curve the ignition and a MSD Boost Timing Master to retard the engine while under boost. I have a 4-71 BDS blower on my 392. I bought the MSD parts all used off of ebay. I have been running the same ignition box for about 6 years, put over 50,000 miles on them and bounced them through many miles of woods and mud without a failure. The timing computer and boost timing master are about three years old. MSD equipment is pretty much bullet proof. Just look at any small race track. Oval racers run MSD 6's or 7 series on just about everything.
Only once have I had a failure with the Mallory Unilite, I had drained the battery dead and needed to jump it. I found out that the starter/charger I used spiked the voltage and fried my Unilite module. I put a Mallory power filter on the distributor and haven't had a problem since. My MSD was mounted on the firewall in the engine compartment for years before I moved it inside. It has been soaked, submerged and caked with mud without any adverse effects.
